home> organic farming> what is it?

Organic growing is a system which uses natural means to nourish the soil which in turn feeds the plants. Healthy soil makes healthy plants. Like humans, healthy plants can resist pests and diseases which means less interference from growers in producing a top quality product.

In essence there is nothing new about organics: It is the system that our grandparents and great grand parents used until the end of World War II, but it should not be thought of as a move backward from current technology: we now have a lot more knowledge and resources on how to do things "the natural way" without having to restore to chemicals to make it work on a bigger scale.

It takes a lot of understanding of how nature works to be able to grow without chemicals. Organic growers rely heavily on a sound knowledge of ecology and soil science. Modern organic farming techniques are used together with traditional methods of crop rotation to ensure soil fertility as well as pest and weed control.
